New York City

Yesterday afternoon after getting off the train at Penn Station, catching the subway across to Brooklyn and shedding my pack in Williamsburg, I caught the subway back into Chambers St in Manhattan and then walked BACK into Brooklyn across the Brooklyn Bridge and then navigated my way under it to explore DUMBO or Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass.

Aside from having excellent views back into Manhattan, DUMBO is quite the trendy artist hangout, and has heaps of cute coffee shops and organic grocery shops. It is also where the Humphrey family lived in Gossip Girl, at 455 Water Street, Apartment #6.

I am staying out in Williamsburg across the Brooklyn Bridge this time, organised at the time both to save money, and to explore a new neighbourhood, but unfortunately nowhere near the water, or the million dollar views.

Today was spent in Manhattan, jam-packed full of things to do in my last day in the US before I head to Mexico City at another ungodly hour tomorrow morning.
I am currently sitting in a diner on Broadway writing this while waiting for my bagel and lox with a schmeer to arrive, and to document my day – which included the Hopper to O’Keefe exhibition at MOMA, and a trip to the International Centre for Photography (ICP) as well as a last minute buying spree of all the extra pieces I will take to Mexico – running sneakers, Spanish textbooks, another small bag, socks and a warm jumper as apparently Oaxaca gets cold in the mornings during winter.

I took the C train to the W 4th St/Washington Sq stop in Manhattan and walked up to Union Square, which is where the majority of my shopping could be done, and to save myself miles of trekking to get everything. Ha, it was such a good plan.

After a coffee in the shadow of the flatiron building, I decided that I might as well walk up to MOMA (53rd St) via the ICP (1133 Broadway). Lets bear in mind that I started at 4th street, so that is almost 50 city blocks (plus the sidetracks to Broadway and out to 2nd Ave for frozen yoghurt). Pity I hadn’t quite figured that out before I started walking…

Still I got everything I wanted and then some and treated myself to a Lululemon sports bag to use as my extra checked bag for the flight tomorrow. I even bought a yoga mat from Nordstrom Rack just in case I decide to turn completely zen in Mexico and also manage to become bendy.

Now I am heading back into Brooklyn to organise all my stuff and pack for a 3am booked car ride to JFK airport. I won’t miss all these early mornings!!!
